The banana is
one of the principal
products that exist in
our zone. APPTA had a
domestic market for
banana until July 2002,
when a commercial
agreement was made with a
Canadian company for
organic banana puree. In
order to supply this new
demand, a work agreement
with a national company
to process puree was
made. In 2001, APPTA
sold 1,085,000kg of
bananas, and in 2002, the
number summed up to
1,140,000kg.
A project that has
been carried out for some
years and that is
beginning to pay off now
is the production of
organic bananas to be
sold as fresh fruit.
Currently a total of 30
hectares is being managed
to export 300 boxes of
fresh fruit bananas to
Europe.
Much efforts have been
put into the cultivation
and management of plots,
in the selection and
manamgement of the fruit,
in packaging, as well as
in logistics and
transportation. Now we
are beginning the process
of converting this pilot
project into an export
alternative.
